Description
Although the name may sound like it, this park is neither in Washington, D.C., nor near the ocean. Part of the Waterpocket Fold, a nearly 100-mile-long wrinkle in the earth’s crust, Capitol Reef National Park is so named because the shape and color of the tops of the rocks resemble the U.S. Capitol, and the elevation of the wrinkle forms a barrier like a reef.
As you might expect from a park located in south-central Utah, you’ll see some peculiar rock formations here, including stone arches. It’s also what you’ll see depicted on this lapel pin, which makes a great souvenir or gift.
