Description

This faithful reproduction of the June 15, 1889, edition of Harper’s Weekly Magazine pairs original text with striking illustrations to document the catastrophic Johnstown Flood and its aftermath. On May 31, 1889, due to record rainfall and human negligence, the South Fork Dam on the Little Conemaugh River failed. Within an hour, 20 million tons of water surged 14 miles downstream, engulfing communities and entrapping entire families in their homes in and around the steel town of Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

As a National Park Service unit, Johnstown Flood National Memorial commemorates this national tragedy, honoring the 2,209 victims and the resilience of a community forever changed.
