Description
The Tootsie Roll was invented in New York City by Austrian immigrant Leo Hirschfelt in 1896, inspired by his daughter, Clara, who he nicknamed “Tootsie”. The candy, characterized by its unique chewy texture and balanced chocolate-like flavor, was first commercially sold in 1907. Its ability to stay fresh and provide energy made it a popular item in soldiers’ rations during World War II and the Korean War. Originally named for his daughter, the company that produced it was first renamed The Sweets Company of America and later became Tootsie Roll Industries in 1969.
